Lauro gave the original stories extra fluff to get the point across to audiencees and readers. The story-telling is not affected because it does give the jist of the original stories but gives it some extra light into things that may or may not have happened.
The original interviews were very interesting because they gave Lauro the basic characters to explore and create new ones with the flair of the original people. I believed that there were reminders fo O'Brien because BobbiJo and MaryJo are the same but MaryJo talked about being raped and BobbiJo didn't. Lauro stretched the truth in that case.
